tough tough

in case you noticed i am back to blogging...

i have been doing the usual stuff except yesterday where i went to do a bit of a crazy stuff at serra da estrela with my friend renato that has been doing some workouts with me here and there, the one and only place where i can climb a hill till 1993m of altitude in portugal.

There are now 4 climbs to the top and i had the idea of doing them all, ALL. lets see that is 3 special category climbs and a 1st category.

I had a blast and it was tough!!!!

Numbers

187km
5700m of altitude gain
0km in flat terrain
More hours in the saddle ever by a lot :P

here is the map

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/portugal/covilha/846636317

the best one was of course the last climb, a 26km one that goes from around 300 to the top. sweet...
to repeat but not so soon :P there is a profile of the course in the map although its not very accurated

and of course some photos

me and renato early in the morning

almost at the end...of the first climb, Covilha. still with a lot of weith at the back, 2 redbulls :P

second climb, Manteigas

almost

bikes wait a bit for a coke/water stop at 1993m of altitude

3rd climb...seia

final stop before the last climb for more water/coke it was a very hot day

the last one, Vide. the best and toughest!!

steep

14% steep for large amout of kms

the sweeping road

i was stupid enough to take a shot in the 14% roads

almost at the final top

me and renato, for the final shot in the final climb, just a 20km downhill, that is easy and fun

LOL

back home with lot to think about

well, i guess i dont need to write much about the race...

after 7h in the cold and rain (never seen so much continuous heavy rain) i finished in the medical tent for more 2h with hipothermia (sp?). the second lap of the bike especially the long downhill to keene destroyed what was left of an "hang in there" first loop.

i will resume my "race report" to this. the course was actually quite beautiful as well as the whole race, but i had a "i will never return to this place again" feeling.

more soon

Ps: thanks Alex for everything

Lake Placid

it was quite frankly a big surprise to see that a small town like this one hosted the winter olimpic games of the year of my birth.

There are more athletes than locals around here now, or so someone said that the population is around 2000, and it really looks that way, the whole city is dressed up for the event and it kinda looks like Kona, with the obvious differences. it really is an awesome venue.

ive riden about 70% of the course and its tough, nothing that i wouldnt expect though, same with run, it seems that the swim is flat though, i am not sure.

a few more shots of the day and off i go for dinner :P

In Montreal, Canada... eeeh

I arrived to Montreal yesterday and will drive to Lake Placid tomorrow with Alex, a portuguese that liuves in canada since 6 years old and race triathlons for 20 years!!! Plenty of experience around here :)

My last week was the usual dizzy week, i felt "bad" durung the week but saturday i did a fabulous Brick workout. Today i felt very slugish and tired from travelling 15h. But i have my bike and health here at least :P

Speaking of flights etc im oficially scared of flying... i have reasons for it, it makes me unconfortable people caughting or sneezing around me, glad the overseas flight wasnt full because i didn change seats during this one...

Anyway, i went to the olimpic pool and all the surronding area and rode with ALex in the F1 circuit. that was freakin cool, a F1 circuit open to the public to ride, skate etc. I wonder why in Estoril, the portuguese circuit the same is not done...oh well.

here are some shots of the day:

a week of mixed "feelings"

one week closer to the race, taper has begun...

Iwouldnt consider this week as taper as it was still a tough cookie although a lot easier on the paper than the really long weeks.

I started feeling a bit off since Thursday, Monday was great (i was not surprised if you read my last post) Tuesday i had a Very GOOD longish ride, Wednesday i had regular long run (this means i wasn't flying but it was a good workout) Thursday i had an easy day and i was glad it was easy since i was feeling very tired, friday's ride was kinda mellow as well as the swim, Saturday i felt a bit trashed and today i had my last long ride/run workout where i felt my legs a bit heavy on the bike and actually felt comfortable on the run ( how many times you have heard that :P)

anyway the big news is that i had a crash on my bike today, noooo nothing special, just a few bruises... a old man (with all respect to old men) was in a hurry and pushed me out of my trajectory in a roundabout. I'm pretty sure he was in a hurry to sit at the local mall and eat freakin mcdonalds... or maybe he didn't see me in my ORANGE Timex clothing Kit and bike, who knows...

rest days suck, i guess..

It may be something i am learning with years of training. Easy days on a high volume training plan can kill me.
Yesterday i had a local race, a so called half ironman distance that had 1.9/81/17 (!!!). I got a couple easy days after a very good block of training where i felt good or thereabout for the whole way.

The race it self wasnt good, i felt dead all the way until the last lap of the run (5laps), then i felt some energy, not much but enough to finish 4th 20 min out of the winner, my good friend pedro gomes to witch i was hoping to give some leg pain. Sergio Dias was second and the small man is competitive, if only he could shave 4 min of the swim and he would kick some serious butt :D.

My best explanation for feeling so bad is how my body reacts to "a couple of easy days", i dont think its rocket science but i would bet that i could do a LOT better if i had done the race without those easy days. i just felt my body shutting down during friday and saturday, something i experience also when i start to taper for a big race.

speaking of big race and taper, although this week isnt a piece of cake i will start reducing the volume leading to IMLP. and i can freakin wait for that!!!!

Saturday

bike 2h00m
run 60m

Sunday

as you can see i have been busy lately, its not a lot diferent as my other Ironman including IMAZ "fiasco". I will have a smother end of the week as i am racing an 1/2 IM distance tri here in portugal after that i will still workout quite a bit :D

last week (the one you see) as i said went very well, except friday where i felt very tired.
Swimming speed is good in the pool, having good workouts on the bike and sunday i had a very decent ride/run, i ran really fast off the bike and that is a good motivator for me...

speaking of motivation i still lack my motivation (and this is a private joke) :P
